Michael Schiffmann: "Justice Is Just an Emotional Feeling: Judge Sabo’s 1995-97 Kangaroo Court"
- Posted on Mumia's 54th birthday, April 24, 2008. This article deals with one of the defense claims just rejected by the 3rd Court of Appeals, namely, the patent unfairness of Judge Albert F. Sabo's behavior during Mumia Abu-Jamal's 1995-97 post-conviction hearings. It has also appeared in the new No 2 print issue of "Abu-Jamal News," which has just come out and 2,600 copies of which were distributed during the April 19, 2008 demonstration in Philadelphia to protest the court decision.

Michael Schiffmann: "The Distortion of Statistics for Political Goals"
- Posted on April 24, 2008. This article is an analysis of the rejection of another defense claim, the so-called Batson claim, by the 3rd Court of Appeals. The court's decision in this point flies in the face of logic, rationality, and, as I show, statistical facts supplied by the defense plus additional statistical facts that are retrievable from the record and support the defense claim that either an new trial or at least a new evidentiary hearing must be ordered because of the appearance of racial bias of the prosecutor during the jury selection process at Mumia Abu-Jamal's 1982 trial.

Kenneth Foster SAVED: Victory!!!
- Posted on August 31. Kenneth Foster's death sentence has been commuted to a life sentence by Texas Governor Rick Perry after a recommendation of the Texas Board of Fardons and Paroles. This commentary on http://savekenneth.blogspot.com/ says it all: "This victory is a tribute to everybody who did anything, big or small, to bring this case to public attention and to get officials to finally act. But it is a tribute above all to Kenneth Foster, and his family. I approached today with gloom, feeling that if Texas executed this man there was NOBODY they would not execute. I got interested because of the legal issues; I stayed interested because of Kenneth. He touched many people with his courage, his political savvy, and his amazing ability to stay positive in the worst possible circumstances. Congratulations to everybody, and let's keep up the anti-death penalty work."

Justice Denied - March 27, 2007 Court Decision Denies Mumia Abu-Jamal a New Trial
- Posted on April 11, 2008: The unthinkable has happened: While upholding the reversal of the death sentence in this case, the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court in Philadelphia has denied Mumia Abu-Jamal a new trial. If upheld, this decision will mean that Mumia is entombed for life in a supermax prison. Read this and the following analyses...

Incident at Oglala - Part 1
- Posted October 29, 2007. Repost May 27, 2008: Due to space problems, I have to remove the mp4 file of this film, but it's available via mikschiff@t-online.de. The internet link to the film is http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=387726205259162082 . Leonard Peltier, whose ordeal is described in this brilliant film produced by Robert Redford, has been incarcerated for almost 32 years by now. He was unjustly given two consecutive life sentences for the 1975 murder of two FBI officers. "Incident at Oglala" shows the background to this shameless frame-up of an activist of the American Indian Movement (AIM), who was framed for just that - being an activist for the rights of his people.

On Torture by the Police - in the U.S. and Elsewhere
- Posted on June 14, 2007. Here are links to a particularly distressing police scandal in Chicago, where people were systematically tortured duriung a time span of more than two decades. A later book-length study by investigative reporter John Conroy who was the one to blow the lid off all this revealed what we all should know but often pretend not to know: The capacity to torture is not a question of nationality - it is probably in all of us once given too much unchecked power.

Linn Washington: "Abu-Jamal: Some Facts & Fallacies"
- Posted October 9, 2007. As the struggle over justice für Mumia Abu-Jamal is coming to a head, a renewed furor on the part of those who campaign for his execution can be expected. They will then argue that it was all an "open-and-shut" case, that Abu-Jamal is guilty as hell, that he had a fair trial under Judge Albert F. Sabo et. etc. Journalist Linn Washington Jr. has written a much-needed concise summary to all the arguments that have been promoted by these forces over the years.

Jav'lin Sings for Her Husband Kenneth Foster
- Posted on August 26, 2007. Kenneth Foster's time is running out: The State of Texas wants to execute him on August 30, 2007. He can be saved only if the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles can be convinced to recommend clemency for him to Governor Rick Perry. Do the appropriate steps, easily found out on the internet. But also look at Jav'lin, performing and fighting for her man's life. If Kenneth Foster is executed on August 30, Texas can be forgiven only after it, too, has finally killed the death penalty.

Bryan, veteran Philadelphia journalist Linn Washington, book author Dave Lindorff, and others. These interviews took place in the wake of the important May 2007 court hearings on the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal. This file is an illustrated transcript of that interview.

Spurious Witnesses, Impossible Events: The March 29, 1982 Trial of Billy Cook for Aggravated Assault
- Posted on July 6, 2007. This is the preliminary version of an analysis of a much neglected topic, namely the 1982 trial against Mumia Abu-Jamal's brother Billy Cook for aggravated assault. In it, I argue that Billy Cook, to, was probably framed for a crime he never commited. On the only legally relevant standard of guilt having to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt, Cook was certainly innocent. Even more importantly, the trial showed how two of the most important witnesses against Abu-Jamal, namely, Cynthia White and Michael Scanlan, demonstrated at the Cook trial that they were totally unreliable and nothing they said could be believed. Comments and criticsms are welcome.
